Position Summary:

This position will provide professional knowledge and expertise in the operation and support of environmental health and safety programs in compliance with regulatory agency guidelines and institutional policies. Responsibilities will include the coordination and implementation of policies and procedures to ensure a safe and healthy working environment in the areas of food safety and manufacturing in support of departmental and institutional safety programs.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:


  • Responsibilities include identifying hazardous workplace conditions, removing hazards, protecting employees by revising work procedures, developing and presenting safety training, implementing the use of protective clothing and personal protective equipment.

  • Conduct Safety and OSHA compliance audits and write conclusions and recommendation report.

  • Ensures that workplace conditions comply with applicable federal, state and insurance health and safety standards to reduce insurance costs.

  • Work with HR on all work related accidents and injuries and conduct full investigations in tandem with management and Human Resources.

  • Annotating and keeping accurate OSHA records. Perform annual OSHA reporting and posting of OSHA 300 log.

  • Actively network in applicable groups including the American Society of Safety Engineers, the National Safety Council and promote MRA safety services and training.

  • Identifies and appraises conditions which could produce accidents and financial losses and evaluates potential extent of injuries resulting from accidents. Prepares reports on the conditions identified and action taken to mitigate the potential exposure.

  • Assist management and/or committees in the development of policies and procedures to maintain a safe working environment for employees, subcontractors and general public.

  • Coordinates safety activities consistent with OSHA requirements with management to ensure implementation of safety activities throughout the Company.

  • Participates and spearheads the Company Safety Committee.

  • Compiles, analyzes, and interprets statistical data related to exposure factors concerning occupational illnesses and accidents and prepares reports.

  • Maintains liaison with outside organizations to assure information exchange and mutual assistance

  • Devise methods to evaluate safety programs and conducts/directs evaluations.

  • Develops strategies, policies and procedures and implements control measures to ensure a safe working environment for the company's employees.

  • Provides safety and loss control training to supervisors and employees, as necessary.

  • Inspects machinery, equipment and working conditions at construction sites to ensure compliance with occupational safety and health and regulations, other state and federal regulations governing the food packaging and manufacturing industry and/or Company practices and procedures.

  • Responsible for auditing the GMP & PPE policies and regulations and ensure that employees and management are consistently audited and informed of any regulatory changes.

  • Work closely with Human Resources and Plant Management to ensure that all Job Safety Analysis (JSA's) are reviewed annually and modified when new responsibilities implemented.

  • Checks to see whether dangerous materials are clearly marked and stored correctly and the employees are properly utilizing equipment specifically Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS).

  • Assist in managing plant safety inspection and audit activities.

  • Assist in assuring known potential hazards are communicated and resolved, and the emergency action plan is understood and followed.

  • Responsible for ensuring, where applicable, the product safety, quality, regulatory compliance and legality of all products produced and sold

  • All other duties as assigned

    Required Skills and Education:


    • A bachelor's degree Safety, Occupational Health or Engineering or equivalent education and experience.

    • Minimum 5-7 years of directly related safety experience within a manufacturing environment.

    • 3-5 years progressive safety experience.

    • Current Knowledge and administration of pertinent IL and federal compliance laws and regulatory Issues.

    • Established skill balancing the application of Safety best practices and trends to help the business grow along with delivery of traditional Safety functions.

    • Ability to communicate with employees at all levels

    • Strong ability to think critically and innovatively

    • Possess in depth knowledge of OSHA, ANSI and NFPA regulations and record keeping activities.

    • Assist in effectively managing Safety & Loss Prevention Programs to assure prevention of injuries, illnesses and property loss.

    • Good working knowledge of FDA regulations, food safety and other regulations applicable for food packaging

    • Entrepreneurial-minded approach and effectiveness dealing with ambiguity and change.

    • Strong experimentation and computer/statistical and analytical skills, and excellent oral, written and presentation skills

    • Ability to work in a dynamic, fast-paced manufacturing environment

    • Strong team player.

    • Ability to work independently at times and be extremely resourceful
